Galactic Patrol

The Website at the End of the Universe relays the good news that J. Michael Straczynski is hard at work on a big screen adaptation of Doc Smith's classic Lensman space operas. It's early days yet, but it's hard for me not to feel excited about this. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it actually gets made.

And for some reason QuasarDragon has stopped linking to the sf stories being added to Project Gutenberg. I'm not sure why, but he's gone back to only listing the Manybooks versions. So just keep in mind that those Manybooks texts wouldn't be available without the selfless hard work of the various Project Gutenberg volunteers who are saving these sf gems from obscurity and who depend on your donations.

Also, Bibliophile Stalker points to Locus Online's reporting of Edmond Hamilton Day. "On July 18, 2009, Kinsman, Ohio will be celebrating Edmond Hamilton Day, honoring "The Dean of Science Fiction" and Kinsman resident." So mark your calenders and smash some suns.

JMS Lensman??? Super-exciting! I would love to see it done with a real pulp look, but I won't keep my fingers crossed on that.

I vaguely remember that there was a Japanese animated adaptation 20 some years ago, but never saw it. You?

No, but I've heard of it. From what I understand it isn't very faithful to the books. I can't wait to see what JMS does with it.

I'll try to remember the Project Gutenberg links in future posts. Just been a bit pressed for time lately.

A Lensman live action movie?! Where do I buy tickets, pick up the video game and buy all the toys?

Seriously, this would be absolutely amazing. As they are currently working on a Green Lantern film (my favorite comic book superhero and a direct descendant of the Lensman concept)I really am gonna go broke from tie-in products very quickly over the next few years.

The animated Lensman movie and short series (TV series I believe) were pretty darn cool. I loved the innovative, if somewhat inacurate, depictions of the Boskonians and Worsel, the Dragon Lensman.

@Dave: No pressure. You do an amazing job of tracking down free sf lit on the web. It's very much appreciated.

@Adam: Not only that, there's an adaptation of A Princess of Mars in the works. They're finally making the movies I always wished they'd make. And I might have to hunt down those Lensman cartoons and check them out.
